Inuit Dog Sled Journey

Winter in East Greenland transforms the place into a vast white wilderness, and the snow-covered land and flat frozen fjords opens up the opportunities for long-distance travel like no other time.  The dog sled is one of the most traditional forms of transport in the Arctic, and one of the most ingenious.  It has been used by hunters and travellers for millenia, and continues to be East Greenland's the number one form of transport during the winter.

As well as being an extremely practical way to travel, dog sledding has to be the best way to experience Greenland's mountains and fjords in winter.  The sled forms a moving platform from which to take in the magnificent scenery, the extreme silence broken only by the hiss of runners on snow and the calls of the driver to his dogs.

This tour offers a rare opportunity to undertake an extended journey through East Greenland's fjordlands with some of the area's hunters.  These are the real experts when it comes to Arctic travel, and it's fascinating to watch how they move with such ease through this unforgiving land.  After an introduction to dog sledding and a little instruction we'll embark on a 5 day journey, travelling the flat surfaces of frozen fjords, in amongst a system of mountainous and glaciated islands, some of which bear the hallmarks of Inuit communities that have long since moved on.

Overnight we'll stay under canvass in spectacularly-sited camps, enjoying well-prepared meals cooked by our guides.  This is also a great time of year for powerful displays of the Northern Lights, so don't forget to take a look outside before bed.  Watching this incredible phenomenon from a remote camp with nothing else around is a magical experience.

This is a chance to experience a real Arctic wilderness, to learn how to travel in winter conditions, and to explore one of Greenland's most traditional and beautiful regions in the most traditional way.
