Dog Sledding in Greenland

Our dog sledding tours to Greenland offer a glimpse into a way of life that is truly Arctic. Dog sledding is a classically Greenlandic way to travel, and also an extremely ancient form of transport.  It was developed by the Inuit thousands of years ago and to this day it is still the primary means of transport for a great many people in Greenland during the winter and spring.  For travelling long distances through the frozen fjordlands and for hunting seal and polar bear, the dog sled is second to none.

The design of the sled varies around the country, and these days most are made from wood.  In areas where wood was unavilable, there was a time when sleds were built from frozen reindeer skin for the runners and salmon for the cross-members!  Usually a team of about 10 dogs is used, with a fan-shaped arrangement of traces leading back to the sled.  Greenlandic huskies are unique to Greenland, and are considered to be the purest breed of husky.  The dogs and their drivers have a very close relationship and, given good ice conditions, it is not unusal for a hunter to cover 50 km or more in a day.

For the cold-season traveller in Greenland, there is no better way to see this beautiful country than from a dog sled.  It provides a moving platform from which to take in the magnificent Arctic landscape, the only sound being the hiss of the sled runners over the snow and the driver's calls of encouragement.  As the famous explorer Knud Rasmussen said...

Give me snow, give me dogs.  You can keep the rest.
