Kulusuk - Traditional East Greenland

Departures from Reykjavik Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 15th of June to 20th of August. Departures outside high season upon request.

East Greenland

Because of the geographical location of East Greenland, the village of Kulusuk has always been relatively isolated in relation to the rest of Greenland. - East Greenland is the perfect destination if you want to experience traditional Greenlandic culture and the original drum dance.

Explore "Tunu" - the land at the back - which the Greenlanders name the East Coast of Greenland.

The isolated and remote location has left its mark in the unique East Greenland dialect and the area's culture has not been affected by western influences to the same degree as in other parts of Greenland. Remarkably, it is only a little more than 100 years ago since the first Europeans 'discovered' this area.

Old traditions

Old Traditions are still very much a live in East Greenland; during the winter hunting trips with dog sledges are still common and may be several weeks in duration. Many families choose to live in isolated spots where the hunting is best.

Once the summer comes and the ice breaks up, the families are picked up by ship and return to town to sell the winter's catch and buy new supplies of cartridges, coffee and other necessities.

In addition to its grandiose nature, the East coast is particularly known for its exceptional and beautiful production of handicraft which, like the drum dance, is rooted in the traditional culture of the area.
