Aurora and Icebergs - A Tour to West Greenland

Illullisat IcebergsA tour to West Greenland that visits two very different landscapes that are linked by the flow of ice; one, a place where the Northern Lights flicker above herds of Muskoxen and the vast Inland Icecap; the other, a fjord where huge armadas of icebergs drift to the ocean after calving from the same icecap that you have seen further inland.  This tour is very much about the immensity of natural forces at work in West Greenland.  Exposure to such scenery is simply breath-taking.

First, a flight from Europe takes you over the Icecap from East to West; a distance of around 640 kilometres, some of ice below reaching depths of many thousands of metres.  Having landed near the western edge of the ice, a night is spent in Kangerlussuaq - world-renowned for its displays of the Northern Lights, before heading on to beautiful Ilulissat.

Northern Lights
In Kangerlussuaq we have a good chance of experiencing the Northern Lights.  Only 25 km from the edge of the Icecap and at the head of a fjord, 160km long, the area experiences prevailing Arctic high pressure systems, bringing many days and nights of clear skies; perfect to view the Aurora Borealis that so often focuses on this latitude.  Optional excursions head out into the wilds to view the herds of Muskoxen, somewhat like a small yak, but actually a sub-species of goat.  You can also travel to the very edge of the Inland Ice where the sheer scale of the icecap becomes apparent.

World-class Icebergs
Continuing further north from Kangerlussuaq, we arrive in Ilulissat.  Flying in low over icebergs of the the Ice Fjord is an unforgettable experience.  It is not hard to understand why this fjord has been made a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  The icebergs, many over 100 metres high, come from a near-by glacier that calves enormous amounts of ice into the fjord every day.  There are tours available, depending on conditions, to take a boat or dog sled out amongst the icebergs in the fjord.  A stay in Ilulissat also allows you to experience a thriving Greenlandic town set within breath-taking scenery.

Prices from £1200 per person.
